Frank said the family of Robert Rudder as well as the emergency responders who arrived on the scene were obviously shaken by the tragedy.
On Wednesday evening, Indian River School fifth grader Robert Rudder was playing outside with his 14 year old brother when he apparently fell and hit his chest on a tree stump, according to Canaan Police Chief Sam Frank. The stump was about a foot in diameter and sticking out of the ground about two inches.
Canaan Police Department issued a statement Friday afternoon with preliminary findings of an autopsy performed to identify the cause of death.

UPDATE Falling into a tree stump didn't kill 10 year old Canaan boy, say investigators, but the death does appear to be from natural causes.
When emergency responders arrived they found Robert's parents administering CPR to their son. Robert was transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon and was later pronounced dead.

But a few hours later, at 8:24 pm, police and Canaan ambulance personnel were called to the Rudder home at 12 Nicks Lane. Robert had lost consciousness and stopped breathing.
"The initial investigation revealed that the child may have suffered an injury to the chest a couple of hours prior to the child collapsing while playing in the backyard of the residence.
